Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates — Khalifa Port, the Middle East North Africa (MENA) region’s first semi-automated container terminal, began operations on Saturday, September 1, 2012. The port, built to support the multi-modal logistics capabilities at the new Khalifa Industrial Zone Abu Dhabi (KIZAD), can presently accommodate up to 12 million tons of general cargo annually and 2.5 million TEUs (twenty foot-equivalent units) of containerized cargo. Khalifa Port will also have the ability to expand up to 5 million TEUs over the next few years. According to the Abu Dhabi Ports Company’s master plan, Khalifa Port is projected to support an annual capacity of 15 million TEUs and be able to handle an additional 35 million tons of general cargo by 2030.
Dr. Sultan Ahmad Al Jaber, Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Ports Company (ADPC), addressed the launch of the port and emphasized the facility’s timeliness and economic significance.
“The Dh26.5 billion project will act as an economic gateway of trade for Abu Dhabi, and has been completed before the required time while meeting the highest standards,” said Al Jaber.
His Highness Sheikh Hazza bin Zayed Al Nahyan, National Security Adviser and Vice Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council, visited Khalifa Port following the launch of its commercial operations and underscored the facility’s significance to the overall economic vision of the country’s leadership.
“Khalifa Port embodies the commitment of the wise leadership towards establishing vital drivers of economic growth which will boost economic and commercial sectors,” said H.H. Sheikh Hazza. “We are confident that Khalifa Port with its modern technology and equipment will contribute to boosting global maritime trade with the U.A.E., and Abu Dhabi in particular.”
Khalifa Port, a flagship component of KIZAD, is set to support incoming and outgoing shipments to and from around the world, boost trade and logistics, and help to realize goals outlined in Abu Dhabi’s Economic Vision 2030 plan.

About Khalifa Port and Khalifa Industrial Zone Abu Dhabi (Kizad)
ADPC, the parent company of Khalifa Port and Kizad, will launch the first phase of the megaproject currently under construction in Taweelah, on September 1st.
It consists of both Khalifa Port and the adjacent Kizad (Khalifa Industrial Zone Abu Dhabi). The first phase of the project, which will in time grow in planned subsequent stages to become two-thirds the size of Singapore, has cost AED26.6 billion (USD 7.2 billion).
Kizad will become one of the world’s largest industrial zones, and Khalifa Port will stand out as the only port in the Middle East and North Africa equipped with a semi-automated container yard operated by an integrated digital system, which is designed to cater for the future needs of the transportation sector and industrial sectors in the emirate.
The port covers 9 square kilometers, including the 2.7 square kilometer offshore port island. It is the only semi-automated sea port in the Middle East and is expected to become a highly competitive, leading global port, making a vital contribution to the Abu Dhabi Economic Vision 2030.
